San Cassiano in summer: what to do and see

San Cassiano is fantastic in every season of the year, but it's clear that in summer, thanks to holidays, tourist offers increase and things to do and see multiply as a consequence. Several museums and didactic facilities, like the well-known and esteemed Museum dedicated to the fearsome Ursus ladinicus (a prehistoric cave bear of 40.000 years ago) in Strada Micurà de Rü 26 (Street Micurà de Rü 26), open their doors in July and August. For those who prefer to have a walk, instead, from the city centre of San Cassiano and from the apartments of the Residence A Val, you can take the cable car which leads to the Piz Sorega hut, which is about 2000 metres high, surrounded by an extraordinary view on the Dolomites; from here on, you can proceed on foot through other several huts, along paths surrounded by greenery, up to the wonderful Golf Club Alta Badia (Str. Planac 9, Corvara in Badia).

On the opposite slope, very close to the apartments of the Residence A Val in San Cassiano, there is the protected area of the natural Park of Fanes-Sennes-Braies, with the famous Monte Cavallo, Cima Dieci, Cima Nove and other giants. Always on foot, it is worthwhile to reach the Fanes Hut, one of the most equipped and efficient huts (also for environmental sustainability) inside the park. In the surrounding areas, there are many trekking and mountain bike itineraries, as well as climbing walls. Consider also the Alpine little lakes, located in the surrounding areas, which are ideal for a refrigerating bath if you are not afraid of cold temperatures.

Summer is the right season for birdwatching and naturalistic photography. Everywhere in San Cassiano there are plenty of birds as well as many scented flowers. It is important to be always well-informed about the harvest, in order to know which plants can be taken home and be used, for instance, for the preparation of tasty liqueurs. Finally, do not forget mushrooms: the surrounding woods represent the ideal growing habitat for many species. Also in this case, it is important to be informed on the rules that must be followed!
